The D2 Challenge #1 winners are announced!
On Friday the winners were announced during the 2:45 minutes judging YouTube Livestream. The judges had their work cut out to filter nearly 200 entries down to the top 25, to debate and reduce to the best 5. These were then scored by the judges to reveal the winners.
SiNi is thrilled to sponsor the competition and support our community. We are forever inspired by the incredible talent submitted by the community, no matter what the subject matter of the challenge is. We’re glad we’re not having to compete against these 3D artist Olympians!

First place - Atelier Crilo
Multi-award-winning Atelier Crilo are architects and Ph. D. design duo, Cristian Farinella and Lorena Greco - partners in work and in life - committed to creating high-end CG imagery and artistic illustrations of architecture. They work with the same first-day enthusiasm on every project, with a strong passion for drawing and visual arts. Their professional activity connects academic research, teaching and lecturing in universities, masterclasses, schools, and academies. As a plus, they love their studio supervising cat, Giulia, a Scottish Fold breed that they’re obsessed with!
About Atelier Crilo’s winning entry:
‘What we love about Ferriss’s work, which we studied in-depth, is the charcoal’s dirt, the marks left by the pencil, the white that burns parts of the drawing, and the
recurrent lighting from below.
We worked on six frames to create a comics narrative strip starring the Dark Knight. Not surprisingly, the designs of “Cities of Tomorrow” inspired Bob Kane for Gotham, many other comics cities, and much of the modern science fiction movies we love.’

Second place - Erika Ruiz
Erika is a freelance 3D artist from Sicily, Italy.
As an Italian architect and construction engineer, Erika discovered archviz during a postgraduation course in Digital Architecture which helped her to combine her passion for architecture with her love for photography. She is fascinated by the use of light in street photography and tries to apply the same approach when working on her CG images. She loves to travel as a way to open her mind and is always looking for inspiration coming from traditional and concept art, photography, movies or simply daily life.
About Erika’s D2 Challenge entry:
“What I like in Ferriss’s work is the way he uses light to enhance the architecture. I’ve tried to replicate this and tell a visual story centred around the girl in the gown.”

Third place - Vito Summa
Vito is an Italian architect and 3D visualiser who worked as a designer before moving into archviz.
He remains curious about everything he encounters. Digital tech gives him the means to represent his world and filtered through his eyes.
About Vito’s D2 Challenge entry:
“I became fascinated by Ferriss’s work. Whilst looking through his jobs I found this extract from his book The metropolis of tomorrow. ‘GOING DOWN INTO THE STREETS of a modern city must seem to the newcomer, at least, a little like Dante’s descent into Hades.’
Those words generated in me the idea to tell the story of the newcomer, and I tried to replicate his style in CGI.”
